MustangOnlyOne Summary:
Dan is selling his 1965 Indy Pace Car Mustang Coupe! This beauty has its original 260 v8 engine. There are 79,214 miles on the odometer but it is not known if these are original miles. Also original are the c4 automatic transmission and the Autolite 2 barrel carburetor, and the power steering. New drum brakes, front and back, have been installed, as well as new back-up lights. And - this is incredible - the floor pans are original and in excellent condition! There is damage on the undercarriage, a dent on the passenger side of the floor pan. The interior is new top to bottom, headliner to carpet. The paint is show quality with base-coat / clear-coat done in 2011. No customized parts are installed on the Stang. This is an incredibly original, very rare 1965 Mustang Coupe! History: Besides the three Mustang convertibles developed as pace cars for the 1965 Indy 500 race, another 190 Mustang Pace Cars (coupes) were built in 1964 as part of a promotional program for Ford dealerships. This beautiful coupe is one of those original Pace Car coupes won by a San Jose dealership. It remained in California until Dan purchased it in 2004 and brought it home to Michigan. After Dan got the Stang home, he immediately began a restoration. The Mustang was rust-free, no metal had to be replaced. There was no evidence of body damage and the body panels had date stamps consistent with the April 1964 build date. Restoration work was done partially by Dan and partly by professional restorers. Concours Judging Guidelines/Rules were followed throughout the restoration. Dan stripped and painted the interior doors and dash; installed interior including the carpet, seats, all dash components, the dash pad, and interior quarter panels. A new gas tank and sending unit were installed and the engine compartment was detailed. All chrome bumpers and trim were installed. Professional restorers were hired to do the rest of the work. The entire body was media-blasted to bare metal. The engine compartment and undercarriage were painted, the body was painted with show quality base-coat, then clear-coat. The engine, transmission and carburetor were rebuilt. New brakes were installed and all stainless trim polished. Indy 50 Pace Car decals were applied. A photo album documenting the restoration is included with the Mustang. Receipts from the costs of restoration totaling more than $42,000 are included. Whenever possible, NOS or the best available reproduction parts were purchased. The owner, Dan, has owned and enjoyed many Mustangs. His first was a 1964 project that he bought when he was 15. His dad and he worked on it and he drove it during high school. Dan currently owns three classic Mustangs- the Pace Car, a 1965 convertible and a 1965 fastback. He credits his wife for allowing his Mustang hobby. He has used the Pace Car to spend time with his dad and young sons, restoring it and showing it at car shows once completed. Dan is ready to part with his Pace Car and let someone else have the privilege of possessing this rare vehicle, so that he can finance the restoration of his father's 1953 Ford Victoria. Having owned the Vic for a long time, resources have not been available for his father and he to complete the restoration. Selling this beautiful Stang will get them on their way.
